Take an exciting drive to Big Sur along Highway 1 south of Carmel. On one side of this two-lane road are 5000-foot mountains and on the other side is a steep drop to the Pacific Ocean. Big Sur is about 26 miles south of Carmel..

A few miles south of Big Sur you'll come to the entrance to the famous ESALEN Institute. It's private, so don't go in unless you have a reservation
